Practical tips for South Tyrolean honey

An alternative to sugar

Honey contains a lot of carbohydrates. However, unlike sugar it contains a lot of monosaccharides such as fructose and glucose. The body can process these faster and more easily than polysaccharides. Honey is therefore an ideal alternative to sugar, and is also sweeter. To be precise, it tastes 1/3 sweeter than refined sugar. Using honey in cooking and baking means you need less sweetener than if you use sugar.

How is honey stored?

It is important that honey is stored in the right conditions to preserve it as long as possible:
  • Make sure it is sealed in an airtight container
  • Protect from light
  • Don’t store at temperatures higher than 18°C
  • Shelf life of honey: at least 2 years
  • Crystallization at room temperature is a natural process and a sign of high quality (meaning it has not suffered damage from excessive heating)

How to use honey
  • Liquefying honey: place the jar in water at a maximum temperature of 40°C
  • How to keep honey liquid: store it in the freezer
  • Honey sweetener: 1 tsp honey = 1 ½ tsp sugar
  • Sweet foods stay fresh for longer if made with honey!
  • Baking with honey: at lower temperatures for longer periods
  • Grease kitchen equipment with oil to stop the honey sticking
