What dish do you most often recommend to your guests? I like to recommend a braised leg of Wipp valley lamb with polenta and blackberry fritters in autumn.
What’s your own favorite dish? I prefer bacon and grey cheese, followed by fresh blackberry fritters when available or Sterzing fritters made by my mother.
What South Tyrolean specialty is the most popular ingredient in your restaurant kitchen? Herbs.
The traditional Schaurhof inn – also known until recently as Gasthof Ried or Albergo Novale – is located north of Sterzing. Our grandfather bought the inn in 1962, and it is now run by the third generation of the Steurer family. After almost complete renovation, the traditional name of Schaurhof was “revived” on May 21, 2005.
First mentioned in around 1500 as “leasehold farms”, documents indicate that it must originally have consisted of several houses in a group. The French under Napoleon Bonaparte razed the property to the ground in 1809 during the Tyrolean uprising; it was then rebuilt during the years following. Our research indicates that it was first mentioned as Gasthof Schaurhof at the beginning of the 20th century.
